The Dark Side

During highschool when school is out, me and my sister used to teach swimming lessons to kids as a summer job. The pay was good and it was fun and fulfilling to see these cute little kids swim their way from one end of the pool to the other during their summer clinic graduation. But also every school opening my classmates would never fail to tease me for having chlorine-dry hair and sun burnt skin. I stopped teaching the next summer and the summers after that for I became conscious and bothered about the constant teasings. In the Philippines having a darker skin tone isn't considered attractive especially with the guys. And I was crushing on someone then.tehehe

But that was during my awkward younger days when I was foolish and without a sense of identity. Now I know better. Why would I give up something I love just to adhere to the concept of other people's perception of beauty? I am a sucker for beaches and every now and then I make sure to go on a beach getaway to recharge and unwind. So why would I deprive myself of the beach and other outdoor activities just to avoid getting darker? That would be such a sad and limited life.

Now, gone are the days of feeling pressured to achieve fairer skin. Multinational beauty product companies surely wouldn't get a dime from me. LOL Thank you very much but I am happy and comfortable with my own skin.Screw the standards. Life is too short to be spent on what the world wants you to be. :)

About the outfit:

Wearing thrifted floral dress, leather belt from dad, sunnies borrowed from bf, MCM bag, straw hat from Gaisano Countrymall, and wooden bangles from SM bazaar

I agree with you totally!!! I love my skin color as well. I hate when I walk into a department store and someone tries to sell me skin lightening cream. I just politely say to them that I love my color and I don't want to change it. They just look at me like I spoke in a Alien language,

Anyway, I love the photos.

I understand where you are coming from. Among my ethnic group, lighter women with big butts are considered "top priority" while brown or dark skinned women without as many curves are just "average". I've learned to accept my body and looks for what they are and understand that I am beautiful. It's so nice to see someone else go through that transformation. Great post, this will inspire someone :)

So glad you've changed your outlook! Besides, tan skin is healthy and beautiful (but I know what you mean, I'm half Filipino)

hey, i stumbled upon your site while blog-hopping. your photos are lovely! i like the outfits you put together as well, so i'm definitely coming back for more of your posts!

also, i can relate to this post 100%. i have naturally dark skin, & i've always loved it, especially now that i know a lot of people would kill to achieve a gorgeous tan in the beach. whitening products & ads annoy the heck out of me too!

this was exactly what the boy and i were talking about a while ago. i have dark skin too (read: i got called negra in school all the time) and thus me having complexions. as i arrived here in germany, everybody was complimenting me about my skin that i started to doubt about myself. and here they pay loads to get darker skin. baliktad dba?

glad that you now don´t care about getting darker. screw the standards.
